smith familySouthport Printing Co. is a family owned and operated local Gold Coast business. Over the years, we’ve proudly given both staff time and much needed funds to a number of local and national initiatives including the Salvation Army Bushfire Appeal, the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation and Cancer Council Queensland.

In 2020, we’re sponsoring a child’s education through The Smith Family.

Support for the Next Generation

The Smith Family is an independent children’s charity helping disadvantaged Australian children to get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves.

The sponsorship that Southport Printing Co. provided will help towards the cost of the child’s school costs – things like uniforms, school shoes, bags and stationery. We all understand how quickly back to school costs can add up for our own families, and are proud to be able to take the pressure off an Australian family and make a difference in the life of a child.

Sponsorship also covers things like excursions, and other fees that disadvantaged families just can’t afford and life-changing learning support to set the child up for success and help them break the cycle of poverty. This will allow the child to fit in and catch up to their peers with the basic tools that are required for learning.

The Struggle is Real in Australia

Amy is too embarrassed to ask her teachers and she feels very alone. Her shoes are falling apart, and she can’t afford a proper school bag. Her uniform is tattered, but it’s the only one she has. She thinks the other children are better than her and often hides at recess because she doesn’t fit in.”

Hearing about stories like Amy’s right here in their own backyard moved Southport Printing Co. to take action and sponsor a child.

The Smith Family website says that “one in six Australian children and young people are growing up in poverty, where even the bare necessities are hard to come by. In a family where there is no regular income, money goes on food, rent and bills. Finding money for a school uniform, proper shoes, textbooks or the next school excursion is often impossible.”

When we at Southport Printing Co. researched the cost of sending a child to school, we can understand why this is out of reach for so many Australian families. To prepare for a year at a local public school can cost upwards of $500 broken down by uniforms ($250), shoes ($80) and the balance on textbooks and resources. These costs come into play even before the child attends the first day of school.

At Southport Printing Co. we firmly agree with The Smith Family principals and believe that every child deserves a fair start at school. We believe in giving to our local community from our local area of Ashmore, Molendinar, Surfers Paradise, Runaway Bay, Bundall and Robina and right throughout the Gold Coast, Queensland and Australia. We understand that is a poverty real issue in Australia at the moment and firmly believe that the solution sits within the Australian people and Australian businesses.
